Simon: ‘She’s a very good judge; mean, harsh, makes me look nice. They are definitely the queens of mean. That’s what we call them.’
Britney: ‘I’m hard to please.’
Simon: ‘It’s worked well, but I’ve worked with girl judges that just will not say no. This one can’t say it quick enough.’
Britney: ‘Yeah, it’s a different side to me definitely. I learned from the best’, refers to Simon.
Question to Britney and Demi – Would you have auditioned for the X Factor when you were up and coming?
Britney: ‘Yes definitely, oh definitely. I would have been one of those kids’.
Demi: ‘Absolutely. I think when I was younger I would have taken it from Simon. But now I’m just like, you know what, he’s awesome to work with, and he’s fun’.
Britney: ‘I think One Direction is doing amazingly. They came from X Factor and they’re huge right now -and all the girls…! I have to say I’m really genuinely interested in them right now and I think they’re great.’
A lot of people choice to sing your songs at the auditions, how did you find that?
Britney: ‘It was flattering, but most of them were not really that great. It’s kind of hard to be like…. !.’
Simon: ‘And I would let them go on for as long as I possibly could to increase the torture, and Britney would be looking at me being like stop the song, and I’m like nope.’
Britney: ‘He was absolutely adorable and he is so sweet. I guess it was meant to be. He’s just a funny guy. I love working with him, I had no idea what to expect to work with Simon. I just knew he had reputation for being a little ‘blunt’, so they say, but he’s adorable. I actually really respect the fact that he says what he thinks and he doesn’t really care what anyone else thinks. I really really respect that. I’ve learned from the best. He uses constructive criticism, he’s honest and I find that very appealing, I like to follow after that. I’m usually siding with Simon and Simon is usually on my side with a lot of things. We are kind of in agreement in the direction and what we think a star should be.’
Britney, how have you found working on the x Factor as a judge?
Britney: ‘I had no idea what to expect, but it was fun, it was amazing. I was really nervous, especially the first show. I’ve never done anything like this before and it was just a ball. Simon, Demi, LA and I just have so much fun together; it’s a lot of fun.’
Britney, did you find it difficult criticizing others?
Britney: ‘I feel like if it was me I’d just want someone to be honest with me so I try to be honest. I wouldn’t want to waste years of my life if I was no good. I’d want to know but yes it can get kind of hard sometimes because you know they are really into it and they feel like that is there dream and that’s what they want to do, and to actually have to really tell someone their dream is going to have to wait it’s a hard thing to do because they love what they do and you can tell.’
Simon: ‘Very, very different. I like the fact that they both came into this not know the process. I’d worked with Paula before and she was very fun to work with, Nicole had done the show with me before, but these two came in not knowing what this was going to be like at all. ‘
Britney ‘At all, we were both so nervous we were holding each other’s hand before we walked out. ‘
Simon: ‘I think what we are going to do is change the format this year. Take one category and change it to 12-16 year olds. We changed the format where the talent goes. The 12-16 year old category is phenomenal. It’s filled with little stars.’
LA Reid: ‘I’m impressed with how great the young talent is. The youth have really stepped up here and that’s impressive. It’s easy for the adults / over’s to be better. They have more time to sing, they have been doing it longer, they have gone through things, been in bands, whatever, but these kids are brand new, and that’s what I’m most impressed with, the kids stepping up.’
Simon: ’12 years old is like 20 now. It is the Justin Bieber effect. They understood that they can sell records to their generation, where historically if you were 11, you sold records to 80 year olds.’
Simon: ‘it looks totally different to the show last year and we make the show I’ve always wanted to make. There’s no host, there’s no voice over, the story is told all through the eyes of the contestants and you get to see a part of the audition process you’ve never been allowed to see before. And if I say so myself it is amazing, really, really, really good. And we’ve found better talent I think.
‘I genuinely believe I know what it’s like to be a contestant on this show from watching. I found it fascinating. There is a lot more reality than we’ve ever shown before. Maybe before, we showed people 60% of the process, now it feels like it’s 100%. It definitely feels different from many of the shows we’ve seen this year.’
‘They’re just horrible to each other, aside from the singing. Just awful. But it’s something I’ve wanted to do, tell the story from the contestant’s perspective rather than our perspective. So we’ve added to the team and I have to say it looks brilliant, I love it.’
‘There’s a whole different story going on back stage which, myself, the viewers have never really been allowed to see before which is what are the contestants like with each other and half the time when you see them, they are actually disgusting to each other. They’re bitchy, they’re nasty, they’re competitive. But I found it fascinating and right from the first 10 minutes when the show opens there’s a story about a very sweet girl and there are these two really bitchy girls being horrible to her and one of the eventually gets their comeuppance. But this is stuff I’ve never seen before and I was fascinated with it.’
LA Reid, what do you think of the new female judges?
LA Reid: ‘We have these two young girls who are bonafide superstars. Who are in the moment. They are not yesterday’s stars. They are in the moment. They are stars right now. They are popular culture. Demi Lovato and Britney spears are popular culture right now, and that’s what makes us very special.’
‘It’s definitely amazing when the panel walks out. Not so much when LA walks out, it gets a little louder when Demi walks out, it gets even louder when Simon walks out, and then when Britney walks into the room – Oh My God. The only thing I can think about is when I was a kid and was watching the Beatles at Shay Stadium, and I saw these girls screaming going crazy. I feel like that when Britney’s in the room. I think she’s the fifth Beatle’
