The record breaking classical crossover quartet first came together in 2003 as the culmination of an exhaustive search by Simon Cowell to find four singers of distinctive individual backgrounds and exceptional talents who could, as a group, create musical magic.
He found Swiss tenor Urs Buhler, baritone Carlos Marin from Spain, French pop artist, Sebastien Izambard and tenor David Miller from the USA who together would form Il Divo (which means "divine male performer" in Italian.) Their repertoire primarily includes pop songs performed using operatic techniques, in different languages including English, Spanish, Italian and French.
Together, they have released 7 albums to date: Il Divo (2004), Ancora (2005), The Christmas Collection (2005), Siempre (2006), The Promise (2008), An Evening with Il Divo - Live in Barcelona (2009) and Wicked Game (2011), as well as several live concert DVDs.
Over the years, Il Divo have continued to grow as recording artists and performers both individually and as a group. The 25 million album sales, 150 gold and platinum discs, over 2 million concert tickets sold and the recent recognition as Artist of the Decade at the 2011 Classic BRIT Awards, are continuing proof of their success.
Currently, Il Divo have released six studio albums, one live album, one compilation album and eight singles. Their debut album, Il Divo, was released in 2004 and went to number one in 13 countries worldwide. Their second album, Ancora, was released in 2005; it went to number one in America selling more than 150,000 copies during its first week. Their third album, The Christmas Collection, was released in October 2005 and was certified 2× Platinum in Canada and Platinum in America. Their fourth album, Siempre, was released in 2006; it went to number one in ten countries. Their fifth album, The Promise was released in 2008 and went to number one in seven countries. Their latest album release Wicked Game has already gone Gold in Australia and Canada.
