Talented singer, songwriter and producer Labrinth is Syco's most diverse act and he today speaks about why he chose to sign with Simon's company - and what advice the music mogul gave him over a drink and a cigarette.
Originally thought to have been taken on as the man to give an urban edge Syco's usual artists, the more mainstream pop acts that migrated from the TV talent show franchises, Labrinth surprised the music world and has broken out as an artist in his own right.
He explains about his decision to join Syco saying: "After Pass Out every label wanted to sign me. I'm a champagne connoisseur now because they all took me out.
"I was on the verge of signing for Universal, then Simon called me.
"They originally wanted me to work with X Factor acts and then they heard my material. They realised I was an artist."
Labrinth revealed more about his relationship with Simon and how he appreciates the advice he has shared with the young star; "The best advice Simon has ever given me is, 'Don't sleep with a woman you don't want to have a child with.'
"Every time I see him we have a cigarette and a couple of drinks.
"Simon believes in what I'm doing — he tells me to be myself and be honest."
Despite his huge success in the industry, Labrinth (real name Timothy Mackenzie) is keeping his feet firmly on the ground, and has a back up plan in case it all goes wrong. He says: "After Pass Out I got my first royalty cheque and bought a restaurant in north London
"It was perfect. I loved the food so I invested.
"Before the Brits I hosted a party.
"Adele was here and Tinie Tempah.
"Even Gary Numan — although I wasn't sure who he was at first. We've had everyone.
"Simon hasn't been to the restaurant though — I think he's scared women would tear his clothes off.
"I think if the album does well, he'll come down to celebrate."
Labrinth's debut album, Electronic Earth is out on Monday.
